Sony files patent for time-restricted ownership of NFTs [🔗 Link]
The patent proposes a system for users to rent in-game NFTs. Interestingly, it mentions multiple user types (gamer, spectator) and both seem to potentially incur different costs for renting.
Note: Patents don’t necessarily indicate interest of a company to develop and monetize related products. Sometimes, it’s a strategic move to stop competitors from bringing certain services to market (patent fencing) or getting broad patents through in hopes of monetizing the “licenses“ later on (patent trolling). Sony filed the patents, but they haven’t been granted yet.
