— Gala Games releases strategy for 2023

• 40+ titles in development across 2 genres

• 13 of games set to launch in 2023

• $150m out of $300m commited have already been deployed towards game projects

• Moving stronger into mobile

  • Question: Can Gala have success in traditional UA channels and without well-known IPs

  • $1m in UA is set aside for Spider Tanks

• Gala is seeking to tie the creation of premium in-game currencies to burning of Gala tokens

  • Question: While bringing deflationary pressure to supply, what does that mean for game developers? It seems to add costs on their side for IAPs

• The Gala token should also be used by all games as the main currency. For example, Town Start replaces Town tokens with Gala tokens. Superior will feature Gala as the game token. with P&E launching in Q1

  • Question: How much flexibility does that take away from game studios?

• Other verticals include music (platform launch end of march, with a music token). film (platform launch in Q2 with 3 titles, total of 7 are in flight), and Vox (Metaverse, land sale in H1)

— In web2 news: Apex Legends Mobile goes offline

In an interview, Andrew Wilson, CEO of EA, explained the decision: Apex Legends gameplay, especially the verticality and team-play focus, didn’t translate well to mobile. Retention rates (and with it, monetization) weren’t sufficient enough.

Battlefield Mobile which was soft launched in 5 countries also got canned, as EA was anticipating a similar trajectory like Apex Legends Mobile.
