Metapixel is the web3 subsidiary of Npixel, the fastest Korean gaming company to hit unicorn status (valuation of $1B+), with a total of $165m raised.
This was driven by their hugely successful mobile MMORPG Gran Saga which launched in January 2021, firstly on Korea only, then later expanded to other countries, most notably Japan were it was a big hit as well.
Looking forward to what Metapixel can achieve with their first web3 game!

The team also hinted at the mobile portfolio now spanning 15 games currently being evaluated to convert to the Go Gala blockchain.
Opinion: I’m waiting for additional information. Currently, it’s difficult to evaluate the acquisition as the numbers are looking decent but lack context. For example, the 20m users are likely 20m downloads, not DAU or MAU.
Strategically, the acquisition of a mobile game studio makes sense for Gala Games. Their public games portfolio seems underweight mobile titles. Plus, mobile games are leading the industry. Now, 15 out of 54 titles in Gala’s portfolio are mobile games.
Building an epic gaming ecosystem around CT (Crypto Twitter). That’s a differentiator vs other games. Will be interesting to see how this niche community strategy scales. Even with lower player numbers, it can still become successful (turn a profit) as crypto gamers are an attractive target group. Crypto Gamers display characteristics of hardcore gamers and are 62% more likely to spend money in-game (especially cosmetics).
Creating multiple games around the same NFTs is a great way to give them utility and less risky at the current stage of web3 gaming. I expand on this in a recent thread (see below in the education section).
Personally, I see the kart racer as the highlight title, and the one with the biggest chances of bringing traditional gamers in.
Looks impressive! Definitely one of the games I’m most excited for.
Gameplay is smooth and has mass appeal (Moba + deck building + arena action). It’s also perfectly suited for eSports, at least that’s the impression I get from watching gameplay.
eSports can give the title a big marketing push. eSports are also an area where crypto elements can come in. The team is looking to build a platform where players can take on different roles within the league (e.g. league directors, team managers, streamers) and be rewarded for it
Deck building allows for meta gameplay to emerge, which has high potential for crypto-economic elements as well. Deck building is a great economic sink as players need to collect several decks to have the upper hand over opponents with different card decks.

Paradise Tycoon is running multiple Alpha Snapshots (we are currently in Snapshot #3) and survivors earn special Discord roles which will help in getting NFTs once the game launches.
Grand Strategy FPS built with Unreal Engine 5. A demo of the game has won two awards at Polygon Buildit Hackathon 2022, including 2nd best project in Polygon’s Gaming Track.
The team is currently working on a DAO system and economic loops. This is where the Grand Strategy part is coming in. There are three DAOs fighting in a permanent world. Guilds of each DAO have to strategize and coordinate to create NFTs that maximize the productivity in order to win the season.
